Meet Bobby Wheat
For 15+ years, Bobby Wheat has led one of the most enduring fine art galleries in the history of Las Vegas. An Oklahoma native who built a permanent life out West with his wife (his high school sweetheart) Haley, Bobby's deepest connection remains right here at home in Summerlin.
Bobby is a devoted father and husband, an artist, a CMS Certified Sommelier, a musician, and an avid rock climber. Bringing the same discipline, dedication, and poise required to ascend the sandstone giants of Red Rock Canyon into every image he creates, his large-format film works are deeply rooted in telling the story of Las Vegas and the surrounding desert landscape. Collected across five continents, his art offers a rare, original perspective that resonates with both traditional collectors and modern art lovers. And while his portfolio includes images from across the globe, his true passion is telling the unique story of Las Vegas. Of all the places in the world, there truly is no place like home.
The Artist
Old-School Technique + Modern Vision
Bobby’s journey—
which started with a 7,000-mile road trip with his dad through the West in 2002—was refined under the mentorship of Nat Geo masters in Jackson Hole, and materialized in 2011 when Bobby burned the ships—resigning from his teaching job to open his first gallery with just 25 images he was willing to display.
While his reputation has grown, with thousands of installations of his work across the world, his authenticity has remained the same, continuing to embrace ancient photographic techniques as a powerful means to create both traditional imagery as well as striking, contemporary art. Through complex multiple exposures and innovative film negative work that has changed how people view the photographic medium, he crafts each piece for archival exhibition in his Downtown Summerlin Gallery with the most exclusive edition sizes (7,11, and 21) you will find anywhere in the photographic art world.
Husband + Father
A Foundation of Faith and Family
Above every milestone—
from earning his PPA Master of Photography designation to building a gallery voted among the best in Las Vegas by the Review-Journal—Bobby’s ultimate anchor is Faith and his Family.
Married 22 Years to his high school sweetheart Haley, and raising their daughter, Eisley, in Stonebridge Summerlin, his life and work are built on a foundation of long-term commitment, faith, discipline across all aspects of his life, and a deep, enduring love for his family and their community in Las Vegas.
The Climber
New Perspectives + Lessons in Humility
It feels nice—
to believe we are naturally gifted, but in most facets of life, talent only takes you so far before you are faced with the hard reality that you are just not that special.
Bobby began his climbing journey to gain new perspective on the more hidden corners of his backyard Vegas escape, Red Rock Canyon. After what he thought was quick progression at the climbing gym, any confidence or ego he had was shattered upon his first attempt climbing outside on real rock. He quickly realized that you simply cannot fake great climbing. It takes years of consistent training to build up the physical and tendon strength as well as the mental capacity to move gracefully under that kind of duress. The mountains have shattered the bodies of many, and the egos of even more, and so he learned that entering that realm demands a healthy fear, absolute respect, and an acceptance that consistency over a long period of time is the only way to gain access. That philosophy has spilled into every other aspect of his life, where excellence is the product of patience, quiet discipline, and a willingness to be humbled over and over again.
The Sommelier
The Study of Wine and The Places it Comes From
Unfortunately, wine—
is often masked in pretension, but its true history tells a very different story.
Inspired by the staggering discipline witnessed in the documentary SOMM, Bobby set a rigid one-year goal to earn his Certified Sommelier credential. Bypassing casual study, he engineered a grueling, self-taught curriculum—filling out exhaustive spreadsheets from memory and running daily blind-tasting routines.
Not big on the polish of luxury branding, Bobby instead was drawn to the drive of the stubborn farmers obsessed with coaxing liquid from the earth long before luxury labels made it fashionable. And like a great image, a great wine tells the story of where it comes from. As an artist Bobby fell in love with the beautiful geography of the world's great terroirs—even spending a month in Sonoma with his wife and daughter during his exam prep to match the theory in his study materials with the actual landscape of California Wine Country.
Above all, he learned that wine can never be rushed. Even and especially the great vintages must endure quiet aging in the dark before it is their time to shine. Beautiful things don’t ask for attention.
