An Abstract Series with a Sense of Place

As Bobby has often stated, most great breakthroughs as an artist are the result of a timely accident, and after a fortunate mishap with an accidental double exposure in Colmar, France in 2015 that would go on to become one of his personal favorite pieces, Deux Lieux, Bobby began to think intentionally with regards to multiple exposures on the same sheet of film. This process led to his masterpiece Transcendent before taking the idea back to one of the most iconic cities in Europe in the summer of 2022 with the creation of Windows of Venice and Signs Everywhere.

“When you’re in a place as beautiful as Venice, it’s very difficult to choose which locations to focus on (no pun intended). So I just decided to photograph as many as I could and do it all on a single sheet of film, each with its own theme. The result is a collection of modern art in which each piece contains a glimpse of the entire city.

Windows of Venice along with Signs Everywhere represent another pivotal point in Bobby’s evolution as an artist. The idea started with his image Deux Lieux (French for Two Places) - created after a single sheet of 4x5 film was accidentally exposed twice in two different locations in Colmar, France.

Windows of Venice and Signs Everywhere took the idea a step further by exposing a single frame of medium format film 5 or more times (each with a subject matter theme) - remembering with each exposure where the previous exposures were positioned on the film in order to achieve an overall balanced composition - and then printing them as negatives. This series of works marks yet another milestone in Bobby’s break with the traditional views of the photographic medium into a style all his own, offering the viewer an almost abstract aesthetic with a sense of place.
