Yin and Yang

A Signature Film Negative: Two Years in the Making

Yin and Yang | Climbing a Classic

A Story of Struggle and Triumph

In the heart of Calico Basin lies one of Red Rock Canyon’s most striking and daunting features: the Yin and Yang Wall. When Bobby first stood awestruck at the base of the wall in 2024 he made a pact: he would not photograph the scene until he had successfully lead climbed the iconic curving splitter crack that gives the wall its name.

The journey became a two-year masterclass in humility, profound respect for, and a healthy fear of the sandstone landscape in his Summerlin Backyard.

“I showed up with an ego and a shiny new rack of gear and learned the hard way that ancient sandstone has no regard for who you think you are. Sometimes it’s good to put yourself in a place where you realize you aren’t really that special.” - BW

The path was marked by setbacks including a near-ground fall on his first lead attempt, a meniscus tear sustained from overtraining a singular mantle move below the route’s summit along with multiple finger tendon injuries that sidelined him for much of the spring 2025 season.

Bobby returned in October 2025 after a summer of training, stronger and more focused. To spare his climbing partners the repetition of his singular obsession, he spent months in solitary top-rope solo sessions, dialing in every micro-movement, and in February 2026, two years after his first attempt, he finally completed a clean lead ascent.

A week later, Bobby returned at sunrise with his 4x5 large-format camera to capture the image he had waited years to take. This addition to the Signature Film Negatives Series is the culmination of a process that shattered an ego and rebuilt it on a foundation of humility and discipline.
