The distance is just over 100 miles from the lowest point in North America at Badwater Basin in Death Valley, to the tallest peak in the lower 48, Mt. Whitney. The landscape of the eastern Sierra is so dramatic, it’s no wonder that it is one of the most popular locations for Hollywood movie sets in the world. Tucked in a little valley between the Sierra Nevada and the Inyo Mountains bordering the western edge of Death Valley National Park lie the infamous Alabama Hills. Just outside of Lone Pine, CA on the way up the Whitney Portal, you can turn north on Movie Flat Road and take a stroll through Hollywood history. Literally hundreds of movies have been filmed in these mazes of massive granite boulders including ”Django”, “Gone in 60 Seconds”, “Iron Man”, and even Russell Crowe camps out among the boulders as he flees captivity from the Roman army in the epic film “Gladiator”. Every morning here in the shadow of Mount Whitney, the Mobius Arch provides a perfect frame of reference as first light brings life and color to one of the most majestic mountain ranges in the world.
